Imagine if you FORGOT you were on vacation?

You wake up in a beautiful hotel room over looking the ocean on the island of Fiji. The air temperature is perfect, your favorite person is by your side, the food is wonderful, the scenery is breathtaking. However, you have amnesia and don’t remember you are on vacation. You remember nothing about your home, your big extended family, or that you paid for this trip to Fiji. One day someone tells you that your trip will be ending soon and you have to go home.

You panic, you are filled with fear. There is no wifi where you are staying, no internet, no phones and no television. The people around you are telling you that you are on vacation and this trip was only temporary. You have no iphone with pictures from your past to refer to. They seem like they are telling the truth but you have no proof that what they are saying is true. You do everything to not think about the end of the trip, you avoid it at all costs and then one day, it is TIME TO LEAVE. Fear is the only thing present.

The day comes for you to get on the airplane. You panic, really believing that nothing good can come from this. It is a very short trip, like the blink of an eye and you are surrounded by hundreds of loving people. You look around at the faces and remember everybody! You are flooded with feelings of happiness as you look around. You see mountains and valleys, deserts and oceans, canyons and rivers. You are HOME and happy to snuggle into your own bed and have all your favorite things around you.

You wonder why you could have been so afraid of coming to this place?

Medium Abilities are REAL. Here’s What I Experienced Saturday…

As author of the book, We Don’t Die – A Skeptic’s Discovery of Life After Death, you’d expect me to believe in the hereafter and not fear death. While that’s true most of the time, there are many times my humanity kicks in and I wonder if all the great things I have experienced in my life really happened, or wonder if they were just a dream.

This past Saturday, I proved once again, life after death AND mediumship are real. I had the opportunity to spend the afternoon in a course in Waltham, Massachusetts with with two famous mediums, Reverend Rita Berkowitz and Joanne Gerber.

Screen shot 2014-03-04 at 9.29.11 AMRita and Joanne are both beautiful, down-to-earth, regular people. They are fun, loving but also have a gift of ‘seeing’ our deceased loved ones and being able to tell us about them. Rita is an artist, she’ll draw a portrait while giving you a reading and Joanne often has our deceased loved ones visiting her at home and she takes lots of notes what they say, before she meets with her clients.

Screen shot 2014-03-04 at 9.30.44 AMAt the beginning of the course we are told that we will all do medium readings before the afternoon is over. Immediately, my fear sets in. Yes, I write about my cool experience with mediumship in my book, but the experience was 12 years ago! Preparing for that course I had to eat only vegetarian foods, have no sugar, no flour, no dairy, no caffeine, no alcohol in my system and be ultra healthy. However, Saturday I was loaded with cold medicine, caffeine, and had a system full of cheese pizza and red wine and was convinced that I would not be effective as a medium!

Both Joanne and Rita shared in giving us information about connecting to those who have passed. Things like: create a safe space, pray for help, meditate, have high energy (music, being healthy and eating clean does make a difference). We’ve often heard we are all made up of energy. On earth we are at a much lower vibration that in the Hereafter. Imagine a ceiling fan spinning at low speed as our energy vibration. Then imagine a propeller spinning on an airplane! Our loved ones must try to lower their vibration and we must try to raise ours so that we connect somewhere in between.

Many of us who are grieving, desperately want a sign from our loved one that they are ok. However, the pain caused from grief puts us in an extremely low energy place that can make it difficult to make the connection. There are some great tools to ease the pain of grief (raising our vibration) on my free audio How to Survive Grief (

Talking to those in spirit, is just like talking to anyone else. To be effective as a medium, we have to be courteous, polite, introduce ourselves and ask for messages that will be understood clearly. Just like here on earth, sometimes the people are quiet, shy, outspoken or may not want to communicate at all. Sometimes we get images and messages, sometimes just images, sometimes nothing at all. Something I remembered is that images from the deceased look just like my imagination. It is very hard to know what is our imagination and what is real.

My first medium reading I saw a bunch of images in my mind:  an older man, mostly bald, with a comb-over of hair across his head. He shuffled when he walked and wore his pants high above his waist. I also got an image of Charlie Brown and kept hearing the words “maple syrup” in my mind. Although I think Charlie Brown and the high pants could have been my imagination, the rest of the information made sense to one woman in the group. Her dad fit the description and poured maple syrup over everything, she said.  I was ecstatic to have this experience!! Perhaps the wine and pizza didn’t hurt me that much.

I partnered with a beautiful young woman who looked Irish to me. When I closed my eyes I got the image of a very little, Italian grandmother. My mind was telling me this was impossible, as this girl looks Irish to me. I heard the name ‘Mary’ in my mind and saw her with an apron on, wild white hair, cooking meatballs. I also saw the dog, ‘Toto’ from the Wizard of Oz in my mind. Then I said “She is Italian, but not off the boat.”

When I opened my eyes my partner said I identified her grandmother. Her name was Marie, she fit the description, used to wear the apron all the time, make ravioli and meatballs. She had a little dog who looked like Toto, but the dog’s name was Pepe! Her grandmother used to say that she’s Italian, but would say “I’m not off the boat, I took an airplane!”  WOW, WOW, WOW! That was so validating to me!!

For me, this was the perfect experience to realize that I am certainly on my life’s purpose: to teach people that We Don’t Die and their loved ones are not gone. To help people through grief and back into life AND to have people live more fully when here on earth.

What I want to share with you is this:  YOU DON’T NEED A MEDIUM TO CONNECT WITH YOUR LOVED ONE. There is education to be had in the Hereafter for sure, but they can be here when you need them, they are only a thought away.  Just picture them and talk to them like you would if they were sitting on the couch next to you. I created a free audio to help you connect if you’d like to take advantage of that. It is called Reconnections and is on my website Be in a quiet place when you listen to it, away from distractions.

Many of us are grieving and going through terrible pain. I am so sorry for your loss. Nothing is as painful as what you are now experiencing. I don’t know the answer why grief has to hurt so badly and why your loved ones were taken from you. I don’t have all the answers, but what I do know is that We Don’t Die, your loved ones are not gone and you can still communicate with them. Hopefully, this will give you some peace.

My good friend Angie Cartwright has some GREAT tools and support groups on her website: and the two of us created a site where we can help you through grief and back into life at (you have to pay for that one but there’s a full money back guarantee if you are not delighted with it).

I hope this blog post leaves you with a bit of hope and healing. Thanks for taking the time to read it.   -Sandra
